Actor and now Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez along with other Leyte officials may be involved in the illegal drug trade, said a Criminal Investigation and Detection Group official during the Senate inquiry on Espinosa killing.

Chief Inspector Leo Laraga from CIDG Region 8 based his assumptions on the affidavit of slain Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa.

In his Facebook page, Gomez shared a a statement coming from his counsel Atty. Alex Avisado Jr. According to his counsel, Gomez and his wife Cong. Lucy Torres-Gomez have always been against drugs.

Gomez has also denied the accusation through a text message sent to entertainment portal pep.ph which he called it a circus.

“That is ridiculous and outright laughable”, Gomez said in a text message. “I will not dignify that with an answer. Huwag nila akong isama sa circus nila.”, he added.

Gomez was sworn to office as Ormoc Mayor June 30 this year after defeating former Mayor Edward Codilla las election. While not in politics, he became a drug crusader through his Mamamayan Ayaw sa Droga (MAD).

Update: Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez has issued statement regarding his alleged involvement in drug trade.
“Controversy is nothing new to me.

I initially did not want to dignify this with an answer, but given that this is politically motivated and very malicious, I am speaking up.

I have been an anti-drug advocate all my life.

I spearheaded a massive anti-drug campaign back in the ‘90s, way before it became a fad, before most everyone wanted to join the bandwagon.

Kalaban ako ng droga, hindi kakampi. Mas lalong hindi ako protektor, ang mga kabataan ang pinoprotektahan ko.

I am sorry to disappoint my political opponents. I have never been and I will never be involved in drugs. And no one can pin me down on an accusation so baseless and ridiculous, it is laughable.

In fact, I ran on a very strong anti-drug platform, which resonated with the constituency, and which got me elected as mayor of Ormoc City, a place infected by drugs for so many years.

Hindi lingid ang pagsuporta ko kay President Rodrigo Roa Duterte noong 2016 elections, precisely because of his strong and serious stance on drugs.

To fight drugs and bring change is the reason I ran, and because the people saw how serious I was about it is the reason I won.

It is unfortunate that he was assigned to Albuera, Leyte, giving him control over the late Mayor Espinosa, who I am sure he prevailed upon to besmirch my name and those of other equally innocent officials.

Do not drag me into this circus. I was never part of it. I will never be part of it.

I urge the legislators to dig deeper into this. Someone is trying to muddle the issue."
